Rain running off a garden path with pots standing in puddles

Too much water is as hard on roots as too little. The good news is that most of the fix is drainage rather than effort.

Worth checking

  • Lift pots onto feet or bricks so water can actually escape
  • Empty saucers โ€” standing water is what usually does the damage
  • Stand tall plants back up and tie them in loosely
  • Clear blocked drains and gutters near planted areas
  • Keep off soggy lawns and beds; walking on them compacts the soil

What to leave

Don't feed or repot while everything is saturated, and give plants a week or two before deciding something is lost. Plenty recover once the ground drains.

A note on timing

Timing can vary depending on where you live and local conditions โ€” in cooler parts of the UK things often happen a little later.
