AUTUMN ยท UK

Your Autumn Bucket List ๐Ÿ‚

Crisp walks, pumpkin patches, cosy evenings and little things worth remembering. Build an Autumn that feels like yours.

Start your Autumn list โค๏ธ

Autumn in the UK is short. Meteorological autumn runs from 1 September to 30 November โ€” ninety-one days โ€” and the best of it, the colour, the light and the dry Saturdays, is a much narrower window than that. Most autumns disappear because nobody wrote anything down.

So this is a list you can actually use. Every idea below is something ordinary and doable: free where it can be, cheap where it can't, and honest about when it's worth going. Tap the heart on anything you like and it's kept, ready to plan for a real date.

I'm Maple. Pick five things you'd genuinely be pleased to have done by November โ€” that's a good autumn.

THE LIST

46 things to do this autumn.

Tap the heart on anything you'd genuinely like to do. It's saved to your Keeps, ready to give a real date.

Nothing kept yet โ€” start with one.

Autumn classics

The ones you'd miss if the season went past without them.

  • Watch the leaves properly change

Pick one tree you pass every day and notice it weekly. Beech and maple turn first.

  • Go to a pumpkin patch

Book ahead โ€” most UK patches release October slots in September and sell out.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Collect conkers and pinecones

A bowl of them on the table is the cheapest autumn decoration there is.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Pick blackberries before they go

Hedgerows are best late August to late September. Above knee height, away from roads.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Have the first proper cosy night of the year

Candles, blanket, nothing in the diary for the morning. Mark the date.

  • Photograph the autumn colour where you live

Overcast days give you the richest colour. Bright midday sun flattens it.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ

Outdoors

Colour peaks for about ten days where you live. Don't leave it too late.

  • Take a woodland walk at peak colour

Late October for most of England, a fortnight earlier in Scotland and upland Wales.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Get out for one misty early morning

Still, clear nights make the best mist. Be out before nine or you'll miss it.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Do a hot chocolate walk

Flask, short circular route, no destination. Works in almost any weather.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Visit the coast out of season

Empty beaches, cheap parking, and chips that taste better when it's cold.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • See the deer rut

Late September to October, dawn and dusk. Keep a long, respectful distance.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Have an autumn picnic

Flask soup instead of salad. Sit somewhere with a view of the turning trees.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Look up once the clocks go back

Dark by five means you can stargaze at a sensible hour for the first time all year.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ

Halloween & October

Pumpkins, bonfires and the properly dark evenings.

  • Carve a pumpkin

Roast the seeds while you're at it, and cook the flesh rather than binning it.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Watch something suitably spooky

Pick the film in advance so nobody spends forty minutes scrolling.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Go to a bonfire or fireworks night

Organised displays run the weekends either side of 5 November. Check the organiser's page.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Do a ghost walk or a lantern trail

Most UK cities run one in October. Cheap, an hour long, better than it sounds.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Make toffee apples

Cold, dry apples and a sugar thermometer. It's a fifteen-minute job.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ

Cosy days

For the wet Sundays, which there will be plenty of.

  • Have a cosy film evening

Phones in a drawer. It's the difference between watching and actually watching.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Finish one book before the clocks change

Twenty pages a night gets most books done in a fortnight.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Claim a window seat somewhere warm

One long coffee, one notebook, no reason to hurry.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Make your own spiced autumn drink

A jar of spiced syrup keeps three weeks and beats the coffee-shop version.

Read: The spiced drinks nearly upon us

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Plan one properly slow Sunday

Nothing booked, nothing owed. Autumn's best day is usually an empty one.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Save a museum or gallery for the first wet weekend

Good rainy-day insurance, and most of the big ones are still free.

Autumn date ideas

Autumn is the easiest season to plan a good evening in.

  • Autumn walk, then a pub with a fire

The most reliable date of the entire year. Book the table, not the walk.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Eat somewhere with a real autumn menu

Game, squash and root veg midweek โ€” better food, quieter room, cheaper bill.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Cook a long, slow dinner together

Something that needs three hours in the oven and no attention at all.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Drive a scenic route at peak colour

One good viewpoint, a flask, and back before dark.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Go to an actual cinema on a weeknight

Half-empty screens and cheaper tickets before six o'clock.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ

Family ideas

Short, cheap and weatherproof enough to survive a change of plan.

  • Do a leaf hunt with the kids

Five different shapes, five different colours. Press the best ones in a book.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Visit a farm or apple day

Half-term weekdays are far quieter than the weekend either side.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Bake something together on a wet afternoon

Apple cake, flapjacks, anything that survives being over-stirred.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Go out in the rain on purpose

Wellies, one short trail, hot chocolate as the bribe on the way home.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Make something with what you collected

Leaf prints, conker garlands, painted pinecones. Costs nothing.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ

At home

Small changes that make the darker half of the year feel deliberate.

  • Make an autumn wreath

Foraged foliage on a wire base. It'll last until you swap it for the winter one.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Set up one properly cosy corner

A lamp, a throw and a table for a mug. That's the whole project.

  • Swap in the heavier textiles

Wash the summer bedding, bring the throws down, and it feels like a different house.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Plant spring bulbs

Daffodils in September and October, tulips once it's properly cold in November.

  • Do the seasonal garden jobs before the frost

Lift the tender things, clean the pots, and leave some seedheads for the birds.

  • Find your autumn candle

One scent for the whole season works better than five competing ones.

Food & seasonal treats

British autumn produce is at its best in October. Cook something with it.

  • Go apple picking

UK orchards open pick-your-own from mid-September into October.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Bake something with the season in it

Apple, plum, blackberry or squash. Whatever was cheapest at the market.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Make a soup worth repeating

Roast the squash first. It's the entire difference.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Shop an autumn farmers' market

Apples, squash and something you had no plans to buy.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Do the first proper Sunday roast of the year

It's not really autumn until there's one on a Sunday afternoon.

    Kept for later ๐ŸคŽ
  • Preserve something

Blackberry jam, pickled pears or chutney. One afternoon, jars until spring.

How to actually get through it

A bucket list only works if it turns into dates. Keep the ideas you like, then give three or four of them an actual day โ€” a Saturday morning for the woodland walk, a wet Sunday for the baking, half-term for the farm. Everything else can stay on the list as a good option for a free afternoon.

Autumn's weather will move things around, and that's fine. The point isn't finishing the list. It's getting to December able to name ten things you actually did.
