A last proper beach afternoon
The water is at its warmest now, the crowds have thinned, and nobody needs a plan.

August water is the warmest water of the whole year β the sea has spent three months quietly heating up and it doesn't give that back until well into October.
Which is the argument for going now, on an ordinary afternoon, without the six-in-the-morning packing panic of a proper day trip.
Why now, specifically
The school-holiday peak has passed its worst, the car parks empty from about four, and the light between five and eight is the good light β long, low and gold on the water.
Go late. A four-until-dark beach afternoon feels twice as long as a ten-until-two one, and you'll never queue for anything.
What to take
- One big towel each, plus a spare that lives in the boot
- A flask of something hot β it turns 7pm from 'time to go' into 'stay a bit'
- Cash for the kiosk that still doesn't take cards
- A jumper per person. Non-negotiable once the sun drops
- A bin bag for the wet things
Who it suits
Families with small children (fewer people, shallower crowds), anyone going solo with a book, and couples who want dinner afterwards in a town that isn't heaving.
Planning note
Check the tide before you leave β a high tide on a steep beach can mean almost no sand at all. Aim to arrive two hours after high water and you'll get the whole afternoon of it.
