Things To Do · ☀️ Summer
A morning swim before the water turns
Outdoor pools and lakes are at their warmest in the next few weeks. Then they aren't.

Open water and unheated lidos peak in temperature in late August, weeks after the air does. If you've been meaning to try it all summer, this is the window where it's easiest.
Why now
Water holds heat far longer than air, so a lake that was bracing in June is genuinely pleasant now. By the first week of October it's gone again.
Mornings are quieter than evenings, and the light on the water before eight is worth the alarm on its own.
What to take
- A bright swim cap — it's about being seen, not warmth
- A changing robe or an oversized towel
- Warm clothes to put on immediately, including a hat
- A hot drink for afterwards. The cold hits ten minutes later, not straight away
Doing it safely
- Lifeguarded sites only if it's your first few times.
- Never swim alone in open water.
- Get in slowly and let your breathing settle before you swim off.
- Get out earlier than you want to.
Cost
Council lidos are usually £5–£8, lakes with a swim session around £6, and a supervised beach or river spot is free. Check the session times — most open-water venues only allow swimming in booked windows.
