A homeware shop with no list is a lovely afternoon and an expensive one. The trick isn't restraint — it's knowing in advance which two categories you're actually shopping.
These are the categories that tend to survive a year in a home rather than a fortnight.
What caught our eye
Texture over pattern. A ribbed jug, a slubby cushion cover, a rough-glazed bowl — they change how a room feels without committing you to a look you'll tire of.
Lighting accessories: shades, warm bulbs, small lamps. The cheapest genuine transformation in any room, and almost always overlooked in favour of decoration.
Why it feels right this SZN
Late summer is when the light in a home starts changing fastest. Anything that softens a room at eight in the evening is doing more work now than it did in June.
Worth buying
- Warm-toned bulbs, in a multipack, for the lamps you already own.
- One large serving bowl or platter — the piece most kitchens are missing.
- Cushion covers rather than cushions. Storage-friendly and a quarter of the price.
- A jug that works for water, flowers and neither-particularly.
Worth leaving
- Matching sets. They date together, which means they leave together.
- Very trend-led colours, unless it's something small and cheap.
- Decorative objects with no function at all — one or two per room is plenty.
- Anything you're buying because it's reduced rather than because you want it.
Styling it
Group finds in odd numbers, at different heights, on one surface. Three things on a tray reads as styled; three things spread across a room reads as clutter.
