The open-window reset
Twenty minutes, no shopping, and the whole flat feels like August again.

By the middle of August most homes have quietly filled up: sun cream on the hall table, three half-read books, a fan nobody has moved since June.
This is the reset that costs nothing. It isn't a clean โ it's twenty minutes of air, light and putting the season back where you can see it.
The twenty minutes
- Open every window in the house, including the one that sticks. Five minutes of cross-breeze does more for how a room smells than any candle.
- Take the summer clutter to one basket โ sun cream, goggles, sunglasses, the beach bag. One place, by the door, so it stays useful rather than scattered.
- Clear one surface completely. Kitchen table or the shelf you look at most. Wipe it, then put back three things only.
- Wash whatever the light shows: one window, or the glass in the back door. Late-summer sun is brutally honest about smears.
- Move one lamp. The corner of a room that gets dark at eight is the corner that makes the house feel over.
The three things worth moving
- The heaviest throw โ into a cupboard until September. It reads as autumn a month early.
- Anything dried or faded on a shelf. One jug of whatever is still green replaces it.
- The winter doormat, if it's still down. A coir one lasts and costs very little.
Why it works
Rooms feel seasonal through air, light and texture long before they feel seasonal through decor. All three of those are free.
