The nail shades at the turn of the season

Coral is on its way out, berry isn't in yet โ€” what actually looks right in the gap.

Close-up of short nails painted in a soft coral shade

There are about three weeks a year where a bright summer nail looks slightly out of step and a proper autumn one looks impatient. This is those weeks.

It's a very cheap thing to get right, which is most of its appeal.

What works in the gap

  • A milky nude with a warm base โ€” reads finished rather than seasonal.
  • Soft terracotta, which is genuinely both summer and autumn.
  • Sheer chocolate, which is the gentlest possible way into darker shades.
  • A clear gloss on short nails, if the summer has been hard on them.

Worth waiting on

  • Deep burgundy and oxblood โ€” better in October, and the shade will still be everywhere.
  • Anything with a heavy shimmer, which belongs to December.

Live it

This is one to do rather than to save: twenty minutes, a shade you already own or a cheap new one, and the season change on your hands before it's anywhere else.
