Warm neutrals before the season turns

The soft caramel manicure that bridges August and September.

Short almond nails painted in a soft caramel cream, hands resting on linen

Bright coral has done its job. What replaces it isn't autumn yet โ€” it's the warm neutral in between: caramel, toffee cream, milky beige with something amber in it.

What the look is

Short to medium almond or squoval, one clean coat that's slightly translucent, no art. It reads expensive because there's nothing to get wrong except the edges.

How to do it at home

  1. File in one direction to a soft almond. Don't saw.
  2. Push the cuticles back with a damp towel rather than cutting them.
  3. Wipe each nail with a little acetone even on bare nails โ€” oil is what makes polish lift.
  4. Base coat, then two thin coats of colour with two minutes between. Thin coats are the whole trick.
  5. Cap the free edge with each stroke โ€” swipe the brush across the tip.
  6. Top coat on day one and again on day three, and it'll hold most of a fortnight.

Shades to look for

  • Caramel cream โ€” the safest, works on every skin tone
  • Toffee with a grey base for cooler undertones
  • Sheer amber, two coats, for something barely there
  • A soft chocolate if you want a head start on autumn

Home or salon

At home is genuinely fine for a cream neutral. Book a salon if you want gel to survive a holiday, or if you're growing out damage โ€” a technician will file far kinder than you will.
