Blossom branches indoors

One free armful, cut properly, and a room changes for a fortnight.

Branches are the most generous free thing you can put in a room, and they last three times as long as cut flowers if you treat the stem right.

Doing it properly

  1. Cut in the morning, from your own garden or with permission. Never strip a public tree.
  2. Split the bottom 5cm of each woody stem vertically — this is what lets a branch drink.
  3. Stand in deep cool water overnight somewhere cool before arranging.
  4. Use a heavy jug. Branches are top-weighted and will take a light vase over.
  5. Warm room for faster opening, cool room to hold it. That's the whole of forcing.

What to cut

Blossom, forsythia, pussy willow and hazel indoors in spring; beech and hawthorn in autumn; birch and eucalyptus in winter. Something works in every season.
