Blossom branches indoors
One free armful, cut properly, and a room changes for a fortnight.

Branches are the most generous free thing you can put in a room, and they last three times as long as cut flowers if you treat the stem right.
Doing it properly
- Cut in the morning, from your own garden or with permission. Never strip a public tree.
- Split the bottom 5cm of each woody stem vertically — this is what lets a branch drink.
- Stand in deep cool water overnight somewhere cool before arranging.
- Use a heavy jug. Branches are top-weighted and will take a light vase over.
- Warm room for faster opening, cool room to hold it. That's the whole of forcing.
What to cut
Blossom, forsythia, pussy willow and hazel indoors in spring; beech and hawthorn in autumn; birch and eucalyptus in winter. Something works in every season.
