Winter at home is a nightly problem, not a decorating one. The houses that do it well have simply decided what happens after six.

The set-up

  • Three light sources in the main room, all warm, all below eye level
  • One blanket per person, so nobody is negotiating
  • A tray or basket that holds the evening's things and clears in one movement
  • Something on the go in the kitchen — even a pan of water with cinnamon and orange peel
