Christmas Eve is its own thing. Everything's been bought, nothing's been wrapped, and the evening has a held-breath quality that no other night of the year has.

So the film matters more than usual. These eight are My SZN's picks for the night before: nothing that demands too much, nothing that runs past midnight, and nothing that leaves the room flat.

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

The perfect length for an evening with jobs left to do, and it ends on exactly the right note — redemption, breakfast, everyone forgiven.

Wildly old-fashioned and lovely for it. 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' was written for this film, and hearing it in context on Christmas Eve is a small annual pleasure.

Make a night of it

  • Start earlier than feels necessary — Christmas Eve films are ruined by a midnight finish.
  • Wrapping and a film is a genuine pairing. Pick something you've seen before.
  • One short thing first, then the main film. The Snowman exists for this.
  • Leave the ending alone. No scrolling through the last ten minutes.

Whatever you put on, the point of Christmas Eve is that everyone's in the same room with nothing left to do. The film is the excuse, not the event.

Runtimes are approximate and UK age ratings can differ between cuts and re-releases — worth a quick check on the BBFC website before a family night, and before you press play on anything with younger ones in the room.

What's the traditional Christmas Eve film in the UK?
There isn't one official answer, but The Snowman early in the evening and It's a Wonderful Life later are the two most common household rituals. Plenty of families swear by The Muppet Christmas Carol instead, largely because it finishes in time to get everything else done.
What should you watch after the children are in bed?
Something with no jeopardy in it: The Holiday, Carol or Meet Me in St. Louis. Christmas Eve is the wrong night for a plot you have to concentrate on.
