The Holiday (2006)

Two houses, two lives swapped, and a Surrey cottage in the snow that launched a thousand daydreams. The Kate Winslet half is the good half and everyone knows it.

Make a night of it

  • Lamps and tree lights only. Romance does not survive the big light.
  • Something sweet on the table and a blanket you don't have to share.
  • If you're watching with someone, agree in advance whether talking is allowed.

If the tinsel is starting to grate, the answer isn't a better romance — it's a film with no Christmas in it at all. There's a whole guide for that.

Which Christmas romance is actually a good film?
Carol, comfortably. When Harry Met Sally is the best-written, and While You Were Sleeping is the most quietly well-made of the lighter ones. The rest are on this list for comfort rather than craft, which is a perfectly good reason.
