Buy one thing at a time, in the week you first want it. That's genuinely the whole method.

Worth buying

  • One wool or wool-blend throw, in a colour that goes with the sofa you own.
  • Cushion covers rather than new cushions.
  • Proper thick socks, which do more for a cold evening than any heating setting.

Worth leaving

  • Polyester throws that feel warm in the shop and static by October.
  • A rug bought online without a sample.
  • Anything for a room you haven't yet felt cold in.
