The first autumn textures, three weeks early

One throw, one cushion cover and a change of bedding. Nothing orange yet.

The transition works when you change weight before you change colour. A room with a wool throw and green trees outside still makes sense; a room with pumpkins and green trees outside doesn't.

In this order

  • Bedding: cotton percale out, brushed cotton in. Do this the first night it drops below fifteen degrees.
  • One wool throw, visible. Over the sofa arm, not folded in a cupboard.
  • A heavier cushion cover — bouclé, corduroy or a chunky knit — in the colour that's already in the room.
  • Then, in about three weeks, one thing that's actually autumn-coloured.

The bit people skip

Wash and air whatever comes out of the cupboard the day before you want it. Wool that's been boxed since March smells like the cupboard, and that's the one thing a room can't recover from.
