Helping your garden through dry weather
What actually helps when it's hot and hasn't rained for a fortnight.

Plants rarely die of one hot afternoon. They struggle with a fortnight of small, shallow waterings that never reach the roots.
What tends to help
- Water deeply and less often, so roots grow downwards
- Early morning or evening, when less is lost to evaporation
- Prioritise pots, anything newly planted, and anything fruiting
- Mulch โ compost, bark, even grass clippings โ to hold moisture in
- Move small containers into afternoon shade for a few days
Established plants
Lawns and long-established shrubs usually recover on their own once rain returns. A brown lawn in August is normally fine.
A note on timing
Timing can vary depending on where you live and local conditions โ in cooler parts of the UK things often happen a little later.
Make it yours
Kept ideas live in My Keeps, keep their category and season, and can be planned, lived and remembered later.
