Living with linen (and why it looks better creased)
The one fabric that carries a house from June to October without changing.

Linen is the fabric that answers the awkward fortnight โ too warm for wool, too late in the year for cotton poplin that feels like a hotel.
It is also the fabric people most often buy badly, because the difference between good linen and disappointing linen is invisible in a photograph.
What to look for
- Weight, in GSM. Bedding wants 165โ185; anything lighter goes thin and translucent after a year.
- Stonewashed or garment-washed. Unwashed linen is stiff for months and shrinks unpredictably.
- European flax if it's stated. It's a growing region, not a brand, and it's grown for the fibre length.
- Generous seam allowances โ the first thing that fails on cheap linen is the seam, not the cloth.
The creasing question
Linen creases. That's the material, not a fault, and ironing it flat removes the exact quality you paid for.
Shake it out damp, dry it flat or over a rail, and make the bed while it's a touch cool. It falls into the soft rumple within a day.
Where cotton wins
- Kids' beds โ brushed cotton is warmer, cheaper and survives more washes
- Anything that needs to look crisp: napkins for a formal table, a made-up spare room
- Kitchen cloths. Linen is beautiful and slow to absorb; a waffle cotton does the job
Budget honesty
Good linen bedding is a real expense. If it's out of reach, one linen pillowcase pair against existing cotton gets most of the look and washes into softness far faster than a full set.
