Transitional dressing has a reputation for meaning 'buy a new coat'. It doesn't. It means using what you already wore all July for another six weeks.
The idea
One warm layer, one hard edge. A soft knit or shirt over a summer dress, then something structured โ a belt, a loafer, a stiffer bag โ so the whole thing reads deliberate rather than chilly.
Shop your wardrobe first
- The cardigan you wear indoors in air conditioning: it's an outdoor layer now.
- A men's-cut white shirt worn open over a slip dress.
- Last winter's ankle boots with the same dress you wore to a barbecue.
- A denim jacket, sleeves pushed, over anything printed.
- Socks with sandals โ genuinely, in a fine ribbed cream, and it works.
Colours that bridge the two seasons
- Butter yellow into camel
- Faded olive with cream
- Chocolate brown, which quietly took over from black
- Any wash of denim, with rust
One thing worth buying
If you buy anything at all, make it a fine-gauge knit in a neutral you already wear. It's the piece doing the work from now until November.
Make it yours
