The Late Summer Edit

The five things quietly defining these last few weeks, and what they're turning into.

An edit, not a trend report. These are the five things we keep noticing in the same fortnight โ€” the ones with somewhere to go once the season turns.

Five shifts

  • Chocolate brown replacing black as the default neutral, and staying there through autumn.
  • Tinned fish and tomatoes as an actual dinner, not a lunch โ€” the least effort per plate of anything all summer.
  • Lamps instead of ceiling lights, three weeks earlier than usual, because the evenings are going.
  • Fine-gauge knitwear worn over summer clothes rather than instead of them.
  • Sour and salty drinks โ€” verjus, salted citrus, bitter sodas โ€” over anything syrupy.

What it adds up to

A season being stretched rather than swapped. Nobody's putting the linen away; they're layering it. Nobody's cooking properly yet; they're just moving the same food indoors.

That's the useful bit: almost nothing here needs buying, and all of it works for another eight weeks.
