Warm neutrals, and why they're everywhere

Caramel, oat, clay and rust โ€” the accessory shades that bridge two seasons in one bag.

Folded linen and neutral fabric in oat and clay tones on a pale surface

Every August the shops fill with the same four shades: oat, caramel, clay and a rust that's almost brown. It isn't a coincidence โ€” they're the shades that sit happily against both a summer tan and a grey October sky.

You don't need clothes in them. You need one or two accessories, which is a much smaller commitment.

What caught our eye

Bags and belts in tan and caramel, which quietly warm up an entirely black or navy wardrobe for about the cost of a takeaway.

Woven and raffia textures being carried into autumn rather than packed away โ€” a genuinely useful shift, because they cost more than they should to replace each May.

Worth buying

  • One tan or caramel accessory โ€” bag, belt or shoes, not all three.
  • A rust or clay scarf, which does most of the work of a whole seasonal outfit.
  • Simple gold-toned jewellery, if that's your thing; it reads warmer than silver against autumn light.

Worth leaving

  • Head-to-toe neutrals bought in one go. It's the fastest way to look like a shop display.
  • Very pale oat in anything you'll wear on public transport.
  • Trend-shade coats. A coat should outlast the shade by five years.

Honest note

Shade names change every season and mean nothing consistent between shops. Take a photograph of something you already own and match to that, not to the swatch name.
