Transitional finds for the in-between weeks

Warm mornings, cold evenings, and the four pieces that cover both without a whole new wardrobe.

There's a fortnight every August where the morning wants linen and the evening wants wool, and nothing in the wardrobe wants either.

Transitional dressing is not a new wardrobe. It's four pieces that let the summer clothes keep working for another six weeks.

What caught our eye

Long, fine-gauge cardigans โ€” the ones that fold small enough to live in a bag. High-street versions are genuinely good now and they do more work than any jacket in September.

Denim in a mid-weight rather than the heavy winter kind. It carries a summer dress into October without looking like fancy dress.

Why it feels right this SZN

The season hasn't turned yet, and dressing as though it has is what makes late summer feel like it ended early. Layering keeps the summer pieces in rotation, which is the cheaper and better-looking option.

Worth buying

  • One fine-knit long cardigan in a colour that goes with your summer things.
  • A mid-weight denim or utility jacket, if you don't already own one that fits.
  • Closed-toe flats that work with bare legs and with socks.
  • A cotton scarf โ€” the single cheapest way to change an outfit's season.

Worth leaving

  • Heavy winter knitwear in August. It'll be everywhere in November, in more colours.
  • Boots bought in a heatwave. Feet swell differently; the fit will lie to you.
  • A whole 'autumn palette' at once. Two pieces integrate; ten pieces become a costume.

Second-hand first

Denim, cardigans and scarves are the three categories where charity shops and resale apps consistently beat the high street on both price and quality. Worth a look before anything new.
