Seasonal ranges, and when they actually land

Why autumn homeware appears in August, and the two weeks that are genuinely the best time to buy.

Autumn ranges appear in shops around six weeks before the season starts, and Christmas ones appear before the autumn ones have sold. It isn't a conspiracy — it's shelf space, and the season with the shortest selling window goes out first.

Knowing the rhythm is the whole advantage. It's the difference between paying full price in August and getting the same cushion in October.

What caught our eye

The dried-stem and wheat kind of decor, which is one of the few autumn buys that genuinely lasts several years if kept out of direct sun.

Checked and boucle throws, which arrive early and reduce late — often the week the weather finally justifies them.

The rough rhythm

  • Mid-August: first autumn range lands, full price, best choice.
  • Mid-September: the range is complete and the season has caught up with it.
  • Mid-October: the good reductions start as winter stock needs the space.
  • November: whatever's left is heavily reduced, and worth keeping for next year.

Worth buying early, if at all

  • Anything you'll use for a decade — a wool throw, real ceramics, glass storage.
  • Dried stems, which sell out first and don't come back.

Gently, though

It's still summer. Keep this one and plan it for September, and you'll be buying into a season you're actually in.
