The finds actually worth noticing right now
What's genuinely useful on the shelves in late August — and what's just early Autumn marketing.
Editorial · 4 min read · 4 min read

Late August is the strangest few weeks in any shop. The summer stock is being cleared while the first cinnamon-scented things quietly appear two aisles over, and it's very easy to buy for a season you aren't living yet.
This is what's actually worth a second look while it's still summer — and what will still be there, cheaper, in six weeks.
What caught our eye
Plain glassware and simple stoneware. It's the least seasonal thing on the shelf, which is exactly why it earns its place: it works for an outdoor supper this week and a soup bowl in November.
Baskets and lidded storage, which get quietly better value at the end of summer as shops make room for the next range.
Why it feels right this SZN
The end of a season is when a home is most cluttered with the season's stuff — sun cream, hats, half-used barbecue kit. Storage and neutral basics are the two things that make the turn into Autumn feel calm rather than abrupt.
Worth buying now
- One good basket, sized for the thing you actually own too much of.
- Plain glass tumblers — the ones that don't look like anything in particular.
- A neutral tablecloth or runner that carries from garden table to kitchen table.
- Unscented candles you'll burn anyway, rather than a novelty scent you'll smell once.
Worth leaving
- Anything printed with a season's name. It dates the moment the season turns.
- Full autumn scent ranges in August — they're always still there in October.
- Cheap outdoor furniture in a clearance aisle. It has one summer left in it at best.
- A second throw before you've got the first one out of the cupboard.
