Worth it, or leave it: the end-of-summer sales

Clearance rails are excellent for four things and a trap for everything else.

A flatlay of holiday finds: woven bags, sandals and a straw hat

Buying next summer's things in this summer's sale is either the smartest shopping of the year or a cupboard full of regret, and the difference is entirely predictable.

The rule: buy the things that don't change, skip the things that do.

Worth it

  • Swimwear in a plain colour, if you know your size in that shop.
  • Sun cream — check the date, but the formula doesn't follow trends.
  • Outdoor glassware, picnic kit and cool bags.
  • Plain woven bags and baskets, which have been the same shape for a century.

Leave it

  • Anything strongly of this summer — the print, the shade, the silhouette.
  • Kids' clothing sized for now rather than next July.
  • Garden furniture that's been outside in a display all season.
  • Sandals, unless you've walked in them. Reduced footwear rarely fits better at home.

The honest bit

Reductions vary shop to shop and week to week, and we don't quote prices or claim what's in stock. This is about categories, not deals.

Make it yours

Kept for later 🤎

Kept ideas live in My Keeps, keep their category and season, and can be planned, lived and remembered later.

My SZN editorial inspiration — our own seasonal idea, not a listing for a verified external event.
