Style an autumn table

Branches, tapered candles and mismatched plates — a table for a Saturday in October.

An autumn table with tapered candles, ochre linen and cut branches

The autumn table people share online is nearly always three things: height from candles, a low run of something foraged, and warm light. Everything else on it is dinner.

It's a proper Plan-it job — worth putting a date on rather than leaving as an idea.

Building it

  1. Cut or forage a low run for the centre: beech, hawthorn with berries, dried grasses, or a few stems of anything still going in the garden. Keep it under 15cm tall.
  2. Tapered candles, at least four, in mismatched holders. Uneven heights look intentional; matched sets look like a wedding.
  3. One warm-toned linen — ochre, rust or clay — as a runner rather than a full cloth.
  4. Mismatched plates on purpose. Two sets alternated reads as collected rather than incomplete.
  5. Something edible in the centre: a bowl of apples, a board of cheese, a loaf. A table without food on it always looks staged.
  6. Lamps on low in the room around it, ceiling light off, before anyone arrives.

Do the day before

  • Cut branches and stand them in water overnight so they drop indoors, not on the table
  • Iron or damp-shake the runner
  • Check you have candle holders that fit the tapers — the most common day-of problem

Keep → Plan → Live → Remember

Keep this now, plan it for a Saturday in October, tick it off when you've done it and add a photo. It becomes part of that SZN's memories rather than another idea that stayed an idea.

Make it yours

Kept for later 🤎📸 Remember it

Kept ideas live in My Keeps, keep their category and season, and can be planned, lived and remembered later.

My SZN editorial inspiration — our own seasonal idea, not a listing for a verified external event.
