Breathing and Grounding: Three Things to Try When the Day Gets Loud

Box breathing, the longer out-breath, and 5-4-3-2-1 โ€” none of which need anyone to know you're doing them.

A candle burning quietly beside a folded throw in a dim room

These are small, portable techniques. They won't fix a difficult week, but they can take the edge off a difficult ten minutes, and they work in a car park, a corridor or a queue.

All three are free, none require a mat, and nobody around you will notice.

Box breathing

  1. Breathe in through the nose for a count of four.
  2. Hold for four.
  3. Out through the mouth for four.
  4. Hold for four. Repeat four to six times, then breathe normally.

The longer out-breath

Simpler than box breathing and easier to remember when you're rattled: breathe in for a count of four, out for a count of six or seven. Six or eight rounds.

Keep it gentle. If counting makes you tense, drop the numbers and just make the out-breath longer than the in-breath.

5-4-3-2-1 grounding

  • Five things you can see. Actually look at them.
  • Four things you can feel โ€” the chair, your feet, the cuff of a sleeve.
  • Three things you can hear.
  • Two things you can smell.
  • One thing you can taste, or one slow breath if there isn't one.

Worth saying plainly

These are everyday wellbeing techniques, not medical treatment. Light-headedness usually means you're breathing too fast or too deeply โ€” stop and breathe normally. If anxiety, panic or low mood are affecting your daily life, speak to your GP or self-refer to NHS talking therapies. If you need to talk to someone right now, Samaritans is free on 116 123, day or night. Call 999 in an emergency.

Questions people ask

How quickly does breathing slowly help?
Most people notice something within a minute or two, and it's usually a small easing rather than a switch flipping. Doing it regularly when you're calm makes it easier to reach for when you aren't.
Is box breathing better than other methods?
No single method is best for everyone. Box breathing suits people who like structure; a longer out-breath suits people who find counting fiddly. Try both and keep the one you'd actually use.
