Desk Stretches: Five Minutes That Change an Afternoon

What to do at 11 and at 3, without leaving your chair or explaining yourself to anyone.

Soft daylight across a wooden floor beside a window

Sitting isn't the villain it gets painted as. Sitting in one position for four unbroken hours is the bit that tells on you by the evening.

These are the movements that undo a morning at a screen, all doable in a chair and none of them conspicuous in an open-plan office.

The five-minute desk round

  1. Chin tucks, 30 seconds. Slide the chin gently back over the neck โ€” not down. Ten slow ones.
  2. Shoulder rolls, 30 seconds. Five back, five forward, big and slow.
  3. Seated twist, 1 minute. Hand on the opposite armrest, turn from the ribs, 30 seconds each side.
  4. Wrist and forearm, 1 minute. Arm out, fingers up then down, gentle pressure with the other hand. 15 seconds each way per side.
  5. Seated figure four, 1 minute. Ankle on the opposite knee, hinge forward with a long back. 30 seconds each side.
  6. Stand and hinge, 1 minute. Stand up, hands on the desk, walk your feet back and let the chest drop between your arms.

The things that help more than the stretches

  • Standing up every hour, even for ninety seconds. Movement beats posture perfection.
  • Screen top at roughly eye level โ€” a ream of paper under a laptop is a legitimate fix.
  • Taking calls walking, indoors or out.
  • Refilling a small glass of water rather than a big bottle, so you get up more often.
  • One proper walk at lunch. It does more for the afternoon than another coffee.

When it's worth asking someone

General wellbeing information, not medical advice. Ongoing neck, back or wrist pain, pins and needles, or numbness are worth raising with a GP, physiotherapist or your workplace โ€” not something to stretch around indefinitely. If you're an employee, a workstation assessment is a normal thing to ask for.

Questions people ask

How often should I stretch if I sit all day?
A short round twice a day, plus standing up briefly each hour, is a sensible pattern for most people. Little and often beats one long session at 6pm.
Will stretching fix my posture?
Posture is less about holding one perfect shape and more about changing position regularly. Stretching helps you feel less stuck; moving more often is what actually changes the day.
