An Evening Mobility Routine for the End of a Long Day
Twelve minutes on the floor with the lamp on, somewhere between exercise and switching off.

Evening movement has a different job to morning movement. You're not waking anything up โ you're unwinding a day that has mostly happened in chairs and cars.
Twelve minutes, done slowly, with the big light off. It sits comfortably next to a wind-down routine rather than competing with it.
The routine, in order
- Legs up the wall, 3 minutes. Lie on your back, legs resting up a wall or on the sofa. Breathe slowly and do nothing else.
- Windscreen wipers, 1 minute. Knees bent and wide, let them fall side to side.
- Supine twist, 2 minutes. Knees to one side, arms wide, a minute each way.
- Happy baby or a knee-hug, 1 minute. Whichever your hips prefer this evening.
- Seated forward fold, 2 minutes. Legs long or crossed, fold gently, let the head be heavy.
- Child's pose, 2 minutes. Knees wide, forehead down, slow breathing.
- Lying still, 1 minute. This is part of the routine, not the bit you skip.
Making it part of the evening
Do it in the gap you already have โ after the kitchen is tidy, before the last programme, or in place of the scroll you weren't enjoying anyway.
Lamp on, big light off, phone face down in another room if you can manage it. The point is a change of gear, and a bright screen undoes most of it.
In autumn and winter, this pairs naturally with an earlier evening. In summer, it works just as well on a patio at dusk.
Sensible caution
General wellbeing information, not medical advice. Keep everything easy and stop anything painful. If you have back, hip or knee problems, are pregnant or post-natal, or are recovering from surgery, check with a GP or physiotherapist which of these suit you.

Questions people ask
- Is stretching before bed a good idea?
- Gentle, slow movement in the evening suits most people and can be a pleasant signal that the day is ending. Vigorous exercise close to bedtime is the thing more likely to leave you wired.
- How is mobility different from stretching?
- Stretching usually means holding a position; mobility usually means moving a joint through its range. In practice an evening routine uses both, and the distinction matters far less than doing it.
