An Evening Wind-Down Routine for Adults
The hour before bed, planned once, so it stops being decided by whatever is on your phone.
Guide ยท free ยท one hour ยท 7 min read

Nobody needs a nine-step nighttime ritual. What helps is a loose, repeatable shape for the last hour โ enough that your evening isn't decided by autoplay.
Here's a version built for real houses, with children, shift patterns and half-finished washing-up in them.
The last hour, loosely
- Sixty minutes out: dim it. Big light off, lamps on. This one change does most of the work.
- Forty-five out: finish the house jobs. Kitchen tidied, bag packed, tomorrow's decisions made now rather than at 7am.
- Thirty out: get off the feed. Not necessarily off screens โ a programme is fine โ but off the endless one.
- Twenty out: something warm and caffeine-free, if you like one. Tea, milk, or nothing at all.
- Fifteen out: ten slow minutes of mobility, a shower, or a couple of pages of something in paper.
- Lights out at roughly the same time most nights. Regularity does more than any single trick.
Digital downtime without the sermon
The realistic aim isn't a phone-free evening; it's a phone that isn't the last thing you look at and the first thing you reach for.
A charger in the hall, or even just across the room, changes behaviour more reliably than willpower. Grayscale after nine is another quiet, effective nudge.
If you like reading on a screen, that's fine โ the problem is rarely the light and usually the content that keeps you awake arguing with a stranger.
Letting the season set the hour
- Autumn: the clocks go back and the evening arrives early. Let it โ this is the easiest season to start a wind-down.
- Winter: go warmer and slower. Blanket, lamp, herbal tea, an earlier start.
- Spring: lighter evenings tempt you later. Curtains and a fixed lights-out matter more now.
- Summer: shift the whole thing outdoors โ the wind-down can start on a doorstep at dusk.
Worth saying plainly
General wellbeing information, not medical advice. Ongoing insomnia, waking unrefreshed for weeks, loud snoring with daytime sleepiness, or sleep problems alongside low mood are worth taking to a GP rather than solving with routine alone.

Questions people ask
- How long before bed should I wind down?
- Around an hour suits most people, and even twenty minutes of dimmer light and no scrolling is better than nothing. Consistency beats length.
- Does herbal tea actually help you sleep?
- As a signal that the evening is ending, a warm caffeine-free drink is genuinely useful. Treat claims about specific blends sedating you with more caution, and keep an eye on how much liquid you're drinking late.
