A 10 Minute Morning Stretch Routine You'll Actually Do

Eight movements, no equipment, done before the kettle has boiled.

Most morning routines fail because they're too long. Ten minutes survives a bad night, a school run and a dark February.

This is eight movements in a sensible order โ€” down on the floor, then up onto your feet โ€” with nothing to buy and nothing to look up halfway through.

Before you start

Stretch warm rather than cold. Straight out of bed is fine if you move gently for the first minute; if you've been sitting in the cold, walk up and down the stairs twice first.

Move slowly enough that you can breathe normally the whole way through. Stretching should feel like a long, mild pull โ€” never sharp, never something you're bracing against.

The ten-minute routine

  1. Lying knee hugs, 1 minute. On your back, draw one knee gently towards your chest, hold five slow breaths, swap.
  2. Knee drops, 1 minute. Knees bent, feet flat, let both knees fall slowly to one side and back. Ten each way, small and unhurried.
  3. Cat and cow, 1 minute. On hands and knees, round the back on the out-breath, soften it on the in-breath. Follow your breath, not a count.
  4. Child's pose with a reach, 1 minute. Sit back towards your heels, walk the hands forward, then walk them to each side to reach along the ribs.
  5. Hip flexor lunge, 2 minutes. One knee down, one foot forward, shift weight gently forward until you feel the front of the back hip. A minute each side. This is the one desk workers notice most.
  6. Standing forward fold, 1 minute. Feet hip width, soft knees, hang forward. Nod yes and no a few times to let the neck go.
  7. Calf and ankle wake-up, 1 minute. Heel raises, then slow ankle circles. Worth more than it sounds if you're on your feet all day.
  8. Shoulder rolls and a doorway chest opener, 2 minutes. Forearm on the door frame, step through gently. Twenty seconds each side, twice.

Sensible caution

This is general wellbeing information, not medical advice. Work at a level that feels easy and stop anything painful rather than pushing through. If you're pregnant or recently post-natal, recovering from injury or surgery, or you have a condition affecting your joints, balance or blood pressure, get advice from a GP, physiotherapist or qualified instructor before taking up something new.

How to make it stick past the second week

  • Attach it to the kettle. Switch it on, stretch while it boils and cools enough to drink.
  • Leave the mat out, or use a towel on a rug and skip the mat entirely.
  • Aim for five mornings, not seven. The two you miss stop being a failure.
  • Dark mornings: put the lamp on before you start rather than the big light.
  • Keep it in your SZN so it survives the season change rather than the January enthusiasm.

Keep it for this SZN

Keep the version you'll genuinely do, then give it a day in Plan.

Anything you keep lands in My Keeps โ€” ready to plan, live and remember.

Questions people ask

Is it better to stretch in the morning or the evening?
Both are useful and they do different jobs. Mornings tend to be about waking the joints up and feeling less stiff; evenings tend to be about winding down. If you only do one, do the one you'll actually keep up.
Should stretching hurt?
No. A mild, spread-out pull is the target. Sharp, pinching or radiating sensations mean stop, and mean it's worth asking a physiotherapist rather than working around it.
How long before I feel more flexible?
People usually notice everyday things first โ€” reaching a seatbelt, putting socks on โ€” within a few weeks of regular short sessions. Changes in range take longer and vary a lot between bodies.
