The Spring Reset: Getting Going Again Without Overhauling Everything

Lighter mornings, longer walks, the windows open โ€” and a gentle way back into moving outdoors.

Spring arrives before anyone feels ready for it, and the temptation is to convert five months of hibernation into a training plan in a fortnight.

Better: build the light back in, add distance slowly, and let the season do most of the work.

What to change first

  • Move one walk a week to somewhere worth walking โ€” a park, a towpath, a wood.
  • Open the windows for twenty minutes a day. The house has been shut since October.
  • Add distance gradually rather than intensity. Ten per cent a week is the old runner's rule and it holds up well enough.
  • Swap one indoor class for something outdoors โ€” a run club, an outdoor swim, a longer cycle.
  • Eat the first proper spring produce: purple sprouting broccoli, spring greens, radishes, herbs on a windowsill.

Worth saying

General wellbeing ideas, not medical advice. If you're returning to exercise after illness, injury, surgery or pregnancy, or you have a heart or joint condition, check with a GP or physiotherapist about a sensible starting point.

Questions people ask

How do I get back into exercise after winter?
Start at roughly what you were doing at your worst, not your best. Two short sessions a week that happen beat five planned ones that don't.
