Summer Wellbeing: Light Evenings, Hot Nights and Making the Most of It

Water, shade, early mornings, and a realistic answer to the two weeks a year when nobody can sleep.

A sunlit path through green trees on a bright summer morning

British summer is short and mostly wonderful, with roughly a fortnight in the middle where nobody sleeps and everyone complains.

This is how to enjoy the first part and survive the second.

Making the long evenings count

  • Move the walk to after dinner. Light until ten is the best thing about the whole year.
  • Eat outside once a week, even if it's beans on toast on a step.
  • Swim outdoors somewhere supervised โ€” a lido, a proper open-water venue with lifeguards.
  • Do the hard exercise early, before the heat.
  • Keep one evening a week with nothing in it. Summer gets overfilled.

Sleeping in a heatwave

  1. Close curtains and windows during the hottest part of the day, then open up once it's cooler outside than in.
  2. Cool the body, not the room: a lukewarm shower before bed, light cotton bedding.
  3. Keep water by the bed and go easy on alcohol, which makes hot-night sleep worse.
  4. Accept a slightly shorter night and don't fight it at 3am โ€” read rather than lie there calculating.

Heat is a real health risk

General wellbeing ideas, not medical advice. During hot weather, check on older neighbours, anyone with a heart or lung condition, and young children. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are medical situations โ€” read the NHS guidance on the signs, and call 999 if someone is confused, stops sweating or loses consciousness. Follow UKHSA heat-health alerts when they're issued.

Questions people ask

How can I sleep when it's too hot?
Shade the room by day, air it once it's cooler outside, cool yourself with a lukewarm shower, use light bedding and keep water nearby. Expect a shorter night and plan a slower morning.
