Vitamin D in a British Winter: What the Official Advice Says
Why sunlight stops doing the job from about October, what UK guidance recommends, and who needs to be more careful.

This is the one supplement question where the UK has clear, official, public-health advice โ because of where we are on the map rather than anything fashionable.
Between roughly October and late March, sunlight in the UK isn't strong enough for most people's skin to make vitamin D, whatever the sky is doing.
What the NHS advises
NHS guidance is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter months, because we can't reliably make it from sunlight then.
Some groups are advised to take it all year round โ including people who are rarely outdoors, people who cover most of their skin when outside, and people with darker skin tones, who may not make enough vitamin D from sunlight even in summer. Babies, young children and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding have their own specific advice.
The NHS also publishes the recommended daily amount and an upper limit for adults. Rather than restate numbers that can be updated, check the current NHS page linked below, or ask a pharmacist โ it's a thirty-second conversation and they do it all day.
Food sources, for what they're worth
- Oily fish โ salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring. Tinned counts.
- Egg yolks.
- Fortified foods โ many breakfast cereals, some fat spreads, most plant milks.
- Red meat and liver, in smaller amounts. Liver is not suitable in pregnancy.
- Realistically, food alone rarely covers winter needs in the UK, which is exactly why the supplement advice exists.
Important, and not boilerplate
This page summarises public UK guidance; it is not personal medical advice and it is not a diagnosis. Do not take high-dose vitamin D on your own initiative โ too much over time can cause harm, including problems from raised calcium levels. Speak to a GP or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, giving supplements to a baby or child, taking any regular medication, living with kidney disease, liver disease, sarcoidosis or a condition affecting calcium, or if you have been told you have a deficiency. If you feel persistently exhausted, achy or unwell, that's a GP appointment rather than a supplement purchase โ the cause may be something else entirely, and vitamin D status can be tested.

Questions people ask
- When should I start taking vitamin D in the UK?
- NHS advice points at the autumn and winter months โ commonly described as around October to March. If you're unsure whether it applies to you all year, ask a pharmacist.
- Can I get enough vitamin D from a winter walk?
- Not in a British winter. From roughly October to March the sunlight isn't strong enough for skin to make vitamin D, however bright the day looks. Walk anyway โ just for other reasons.
- Is it possible to take too much?
- Yes. Taking high doses over long periods can be harmful, which is why the NHS publishes an upper limit and why high-dose products should not be self-prescribed.
